The purpose of this assignment was to demonstrate skill with typography by creating a poster using only text characters. Futura is known as one of the starters of geometric fonts. Which are very popular in the minimalist scene to this very day. With it’s simplicity and name it has embedded itself in our idea of what the future looks like while also having a historic feeling since it has been our idea of the future for so long. The creator, Paul Renner, hated fonts that were much more narrow and less consistent. The font was influential in ushering in the modern era. The weight of each letter is consistently even through as much of the font as possible. It stays as close to the most basic geometric shapes as possible like triangles, circles, and squares.
Futura was created for the Frankfurt project which was a public housing program based in Frankfurt which ran with an accompanying magazine of the same name. The font was inspired by Bauhaus style which ran until 1933 when it was shut down by Nazis, Renner himself was arrested that year by nazis for a short time and eventually had to relocate to another country. The slogan which was ran to advertise the font truly was representative of what it has become “die Schrift unserer Zeit” which translates to “the typeface of today and tomorrow” The typeface took three years to publicate from its initial conception and originally was set for two versions to release side by side, but the publication process was taking far too long while similar typefaces were being released leaving Renner uneasy and eventually forcing him to drop the second version for sake of time. The font is so notably legible that it was used to leave a message on a plaque on the moon. Furtura is truly the font of the past created in the mindset ready for the future.
